VACCINEX, L.P. RECEIVES $2 MILLION ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM AWARD

Rochester, N.Y. September 27, 2000 Vaccinex, L.P., a research and development-based biotechnology company, today announced that it has been named as recipient of a $2 million Advanced Technology Program Award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The three year award will support and expand ongoing research to develop and commercialize vaccines for cancer.

"We are honored to have been selected as a recipient of this prestigious award", said Maurice Zauderer, Ph.D., Scientific Director at Vaccinex. "We are building our company on three novel technology platforms for antigen discovery, for vaccine delivery, and for the selection of human monoclonal antibodies with therapeutic applications. Fundamental to our business strategy has been confidence that the value and efficiency of our proprietary technologies would be appreciated by others who share our goals."

About Vaccinex
Vaccinex was founded in 1997 by Dr. Zauderer, then Professor of Oncology at the University of Rochester, and Deepak Sahasrabudhe, M.D., Director of the Genito/Urinary Oncology Clinic at the University of Rochester Cancer Center. The Vaccinex discovery platform provides a uniquely efficient means of identifying immune target molecules, called antigens, that are recognized by T cells and B cells. By incorporating such antigens into a novel and effective vaccine delivery system the company expects to develop and commercialize vaccines to stimulate the immune system to attack and eradicate tumor cells that express these antigens on their surface. Since 1997, the company has grown to employ 20 scientists and support staff and, in anticipation of continuing growth, has initiated planning for new facilities in Rochester. This ATP Award supplements grants received from other governmental agencies, including the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program of the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Army Breast Cancer Research Program.

About the Advanced Technology Program (ATP)
The ATP Awards by the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the U.S. Department of Commerce are intended to promote the development of innovative technologies that promise significant commercial payoffs and widespread benefits for the nation. Several features set the ATP program apart from other government R&D programs. Among these, ATP projects focus on the technology needs of American industry, not those of government. Research priorities for the ATP are set by industry, based on their understanding of the marketplace and research opportunities. For-profit companies conceive, propose, co-fund, and execute ATP projects and programs. The ATP awards are made strictly on the basis of rigorous peer-reviewed competitions. Selection is based on the innovation, the technical risk, potential economic benefits to the nation and the strength of the commercialization plan of the project.
