VACCINEX NAMES ERNEST S. SMITH, Ph.D. RESEARCH DIRECTOR

Rochester, N.Y. June 21, 2001 The Board of Directors of Vaccinex, Inc. announced today the promotion of Dr. Ernest Smith to Director of Research. Dr. Smith was a founding member of the company and a key developer of its core gene discovery technology. Formerly Director of Molecular Immunology, Dr. Smith is an experienced molecular and cellular immunologist with the skills and expertise to lead the company's discovery efforts.

Maurice Zauderer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vaccinex, said, "Ernest Smith is an outstanding scientist and an exceptional leader. His contributions have been and will continue to be essential to our commercialization goals."

Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 1998 from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He is listed as an inventor on three patent applications by Vaccinex describing novel gene discovery methods, antigen delivery systems, and production of fully human monoclonal antibodies
