VACCINEX AWARDED GRANT TO STUDY MUSCULOSKELETAL DEVELOPMENT

Rochester, N.Y. June 28, 2001 Vaccinex, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. The grant, entitled "Genetic Selection to Clone Chrondrogenic Regulators" will study genes involved in musculoskeletal stem cell differentiation.

Research Director and Principal Investigator, Dr. Ernest Smith, said, "We are very enthusiastic about applying our core competencies in the area of stem cell biology. Our Gene Selection Technology opens doors to the study of terminally differentiated cells that were previously closed due to the fact that these cells do not proliferate."

President and Chief Executive Officer, Maurice Zauderer, said, "The goal of this research is to develop therapeutic products for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, diseases that afflict more than 60 million Americans. We are thankful to the National Institutes of Health for helping Vaccinex achieve this goal."

Vaccinex was founded in 1997 by Dr. Zauderer, then Professor of Oncology at the University of Rochester, and Deepak Sahasrabudhe, M.D., Director of the Genito/Urinary Oncology Clinic at the University of Rochester Cancer Center. The Vaccinex discovery platform provides a uniquely efficient means of identifying immune target molecules, called antigens, that are recognized by T cells and B cells. By incorporating such antigens into a novel and effective vaccine delivery system the company expects to develop and commercialize vaccines to stimulate the immune system to attack and eradicate tumor cells that express these antigens on their surface. Since 1997, the company has grown to employ 24 scientists and support staff and, in anticipation of continuing growth, has initiated planning for new facilities in Rochester. This award supplements grants received from federal agencies, including an ATP Award from the Department of Commerce, other (SBIR) Grants from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Army Breast Cancer Research Program.
