VACCINEX AND UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER ANNOUNCE PATENT AWARD
ROCHESTER, NY – Vaccinex, Inc. and the University of Rochester announced today the award of a U.S. patent relating to Vaccinex’s core gene library technology. The patent, U.S. Patent No. 6,706,477, was issued on March 16, 2004 and is entitled “Methods for Producing Polynucleotide Libraries in Vaccinia Virus.” This patent relates to technology discovered by Dr. Maurice Zauderer, Vaccinex’s President and CEO, while he was a scientist at the University of Rochester. Vaccinex has an exclusive, worldwide license to utilize this technology from the University of Rochester. Vaccinex is actively commercializing this and other proprietary technologies to discover and develop fully human therapeutic monoclonal antibodies.
U.S. Patent No. 6,706,477 encompasses claims relating to the construction of diverse cDNA libraries using a vaccinia virus-based vector. Vaccinia virus is a versatile viral vector that is used to express recombinant genes in mammalian cells. The invention disclosed in this patent represents a significant advance by the creation of an enabling platform technology that has numerous uses in biomedical research and biotechnology.
Regarding the patent, Dr. Zauderer stated, “The grant of this patent highlights Vaccinex’s research leadership in the use of vaccinia vectors to construct gene libraries. Using this core vaccinia library technology, we have developed a number of important applications for the development of therapeutic products including proprietary methods for antigen selection and antibody discovery.”
The work reflected in this patent was supported, in part, by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. government may have certain rights to the inventions therein.
Vaccinex is a privately held biotechnology company engaged in the discovery and development of novel therapeutic antibodies. The company’s strategy is to leverage the capabilities of its proprietary antibody discovery technology to develop its own pipeline of therapeutic antibody products, while using near-term revenues from antibody collaborations to help support its operating costs.
